A Contract Reseach Organization (CRO) is an entity delegated by the sponsor to perform some or all of the activities of a clinical trial on its behalf. The sponsor may decide to delegate part of the work to the CRO for various reasons: lack of staff, available budget, etc… There could be multiple CRO or freelancers with similar responsibilities for a trial, depending on how many countries are involved and the capability of a CRO to handle all of them. The CRO can be selected by the Sponsor based on previous work experiences, or after a price quotations evaluation. It is important to detail in the agreement between the Sponsor and the CRO the activities delegated to the CRO and the responsibilities which remain to the sponsor.
